Dean's message

Valery S. Katkalo

Welcome to the Graduate School of Management, St. Petersburg State University website. The school was created as part of the Russian National Priority Project in Education, based upon the foundation of the School of Management (SOM). We are grateful for your interest in GSOM and its programs aimed at developing professional managers using the current business practices. Our priority is to ensure that all GSOM academic programs meet the rapidly growing demand for managerial education of international quality on the part of Russian companies and public authorities due to the increasing internationalization of the Russian economy and the country’s forthcoming accession to the WTO.

Over the course of its 16 years of development, the School of Management, St. Petersburg State University has earned a reputation as of one of the leading Russian business schools. The School was opened at the oldest Russian university in 1993 with a view to supporting the development of a market economy in Russia. SOM was created in alliance with the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley — one of the world’s leading business schools. The uniqueness of the GSOM model is due to the successful synthesis of classical university traditions and innovative approaches in business education. A commitment to such core values as the determined internationalization of academic and research projects, an emphasis on creating new knowledge and strong ties to the business community are the means that allow the successful development of the GSOM business model along the lines of the leading international management schools.

As a result of such achievements in these three directions, the Graduate School of Management, St. Petersburg State University currently leads the integration of Russia into the global system of business education. In addition, GSOM is developing a remarkable portfolio of degree programs that is unique among Russian management schools: from the Bachelor’s Degree to the MBA and the Doctoral Program, three of which (the Master of International Business (MIB) Program, the Master in International Technology and Innovation Management (MITIM) Program, and the Dual Degree Executive MBA) are taught in English only and meet the requirements of European professional organizations.

GSOM has 35 academic partners among the world’s leading business schools and universities and organizes student exchanges based on bilateral credit transfer. Another acknowledgement of the international standards of our academic programs is the fact that in 2005, for the first time in Russian history, SOM students took 3rd prize in the L’Oreal e-Strat Challenge. In recent years the School has also become a prominent center for scientific research in management and publishes two prestigious research journals (The Russian Management Journal and the St. Petersburg University Vestnik (Bulletin) Management Series). A pilot series of full-scale case-study collections integrating the experience of Russian companies has also been published. Close cooperation between GSOM and leading corporations, unprecedented in Russian business education, is also of particular importance. The successful international fund-raising campaign carried out by the Board of Advisors in order to finance the construction of a new classroom wing of the School is a tangible result of these relationships.

However, the successful careers of GSOM alumni are the most important criteria by which the school’s superior educational standards are determined. Today our “family” accounts for more than 3000 professional managers working successfully at home and abroad with leading Russian and international companies. These are the companies which participate in our Career Days, provide internship opportunities for GSOM students and recruit our alumni.

I hope that your visit to our site will be but the beginning of lasting acquaintance with the Graduate School of Management, St. Petersburg State University.

We look forward to seeing you at Russia’s most eminent university and hope that we will be able to assist you in achieving your professional and personal best.
