Quality and Innovation in Educational Programs

Gradually going transformation of the School of Management into the Graduate School of Management requires that GSOM shall reach such balance in its programs portfolio that the graduate students will outnumber the undergraduate ones. Enrollment plans for the degree programs were developed on the basis of main principles of the GSOM programs portfolio:
  • keeping the Bachelor programs enrollment level at about 210;
  • a further development of existing programs (with exception of the traditional for Russia Doctoral program) and launching several new graduate programs;
  • focusing on MBA/EMBA and Master programs as two fastest-growing sectors in the GSOM portfolio with nearly three-fold growth;
  • a major change in GSOM from prevailing Russian-language instruction to a bi-lingual School with a dominating status of English-language instruction at the degree programs;
  • by 2012 the number of the students in the degree programs will reach 1600

Bachelor Programs

During 2009-2012 the enrollment to the Bachelor programs will stay at the level of 210 students, with more than 50% students studying in the tuition-based format and the rest – with the tuition covered from the federal budget. This 4-year program will continue to have 3 concentration areas: International Management, Financial Management, Marketing and will have up to 35 students in each of 6 groups at each year. All core courses shall be taught in 3 parallel sections of up to 70 students in each course. The proportion of the courses in English will drastically increase during 2009-2012 to further develop two-way international exchanges on the Bachelor level.

Master Programs

Enrollment to Master in Management programs shall grow from 60 to 150 students. GSOM’s plans are in line with the Russia’s transition to the Bologna two-tier system. GSOM also is following a common practice at the leading EU business schools which center Master programs as a key component in their programs portfolios  Such programs also get a lot of attention through regular ranking by the Financial Times.

The main growth area is the MIB program where teaching of the core courses shall be in 2 parallel sections. The number of elective courses will increase greatly.  Annual enrollment to the MITIM program will be limited by 40 students.

Since 2006 the Master programs at GSOM include one compulsory semester of studying abroad. It is based on international exchanges and results in a further development of already highly international learning environment at GSOM.  It is also planned that GSOM  disjoining a pan-European CEMS Master in Management (MIM) program with the first intake of 20 EU and world students in 2009.  During the following two years the number will increase to 40 foreign CEMS MIM students at GSOM.

Executive MBA Programs

Overall enrollment to the GSOM Executive MBA programs shall increase from 110 in 2007/08 to 240 in 2011/12. The main growth will come at the Russian-language EMBA, with 3 intakes each academic year. The main change is in the size of each class – from the current 35-40 (110 for all classes of the program) to 50-60 in 2011/12 (160 total). In January 2009 the Dual-degree EMBA with HEC – Paris was launched and had 30 participants for a start. This program has one intake annually, with the enrolled students number up to 80 (Fall 2011, one section scenario) or, alternatively, up to 40 per each of 2 intakes (in Fall 2011 and Spring 2012).

Full-time MBA Program

An full-time English-language MBA program will become one of the GSOM flagship programs. Selection of the best students for this program will be done nation-wide as well as globally. It is vital to have quality accommodation facilities for the students, so the program shall be launched after the new GSOM campus will be opened around 2011.  The full-time MBA program in English will have 15-16 months duration and its initial intake of 50 students will increase by 10 students in 2011. In case of  2 intakes per year, the MBA program enrollment shall increase up to 120 students per year.

Executive Education

GSOM Executive Education programs besides the GSOM Executive MBA will develop in two areas: professional retraining diploma programs and non-degree programs. Professional retraining diploma programs (modular-based and about 9 months of overall duration) have their own niche in the market for the Executive Education.

Since 1998 the School participates in the “Presidential Initiative Program” which is based on a retraining diploma format and in which GSOM launched in 2007 a new program for managers from the public service sectors (e.g. the healthcare industry, education and culture institutions). Since 2006 the School uses this format for a “Financial Management” program designed for professional managers from the Krasnodar region. New programs of this format were also designed in 2007, such as: “Operations Management in Manufacturing” (per request from an aircraft industry company), “Management in the Healthcare Sector” (together with the Medical Faculty of SPSU) and “Managing Organizational Development” (together with the Faculty of Psychology, SPSU). It is planned that the overall enrollment in the professional retraining diploma programs will grow from 100 in 2007/08 to 120 in 2008/09 and will stay at this level thereafter with 3-4 intakes annually and having each section of 35-40 participants.

GSOM  will continue to develop new opportunities for cooperation with corporate universities operating at  large Russian and international companies. Also GSOM will concentrate on delivering programs for executives thus positioning itself in the upper end of the Russian market for non-degree business education programs. Topics for the majority of the customized and open programs will be chosen in favor of more analytical ones.  GSOM will also focus on unique knowledge and expertise that GSOM has developed.  In the 2007/08 academic year good examples of such 2-3 days programs are “Relationship Marketing in B2B Markets”, “Fashion and Luxury Business Management” and “Real Estate Finance”. Many of the programs will be organized together with top U.S. and European partner schools. The most efficient expansion scenario of the Executive Education for the next 5 years and thereafter will  depend on the actual time of completion of the state-of-the-art Executive Education Center in the new GSOM campus.

Master in Finance Program

GSOM Master in Finance program is one of the most analytical programs being currently offered by the leading international business schools. Though it formally results in a Master degree, it is different from pre-experience Master programs, and is usually positioned by business schools between MBA and Ph.D. programs. Our plan is to launch MiF program with intake of 25 carefully selected students with the first university degrees mostly in math, physics and engineering. The MiF program will be designed and run in close cooperation with academic partners from top global schools with excellent expertise in this area (e.g.., Haas School and LBS), as well as in collaboration with leading international and Russian financial institutions and consulting firms (e.g., PricewaterhouseCoopers and KIT-Finance).  In 2010 and 2011 the intake will slowly increase to 30 and 35 students respectively.

Ph.D. Program

Almost every international top business school is proud of its strong Ph.D. program in Management / Business Administration. These programs are a very important source for advanced research and raising of the faculty for the school.  The best Ph.D. programs also heavily contribute to development of the global brands of the parent business schools through its graduates working at world top universities.  The current system is highly supported with the Bologna reforms in education.

Russian system in the field of Doctoral programs has its specifics which make it lag behind in the results.  In Russia the first and prevailing level of the doctoral education is a “Candidate of Sciences” degree which lasts 3 years in a full-time format  (to be compared to 4-5 years as a minimum at international universities),  Moreover, in Russia management is yet not recognized as a separate field of Doctoral studies by the Ministry of Education and Science.

Therefore, during the next 3-5 years GSOM shall overcome these crucial limitations by  establishing its own western-standards-based Ph.D. program using the unique status of St. Petersburg University, and gaining from highly awaited changes in the Russian regulations on Doctoral degrees in line with the Bologna reforms.

While enrollment into the current Doctoral program at GSOM will continue until 2009 (including 2009), parallelly a new Ph.D. in Management program of international caliber will be launched in 2010 with an initial enrollment of 15 students. This relatively small size of the program will continue for a few years to ensure the highest quality of students and their research output. The Ph.D. program will focus on the Strategy, Finance, and Marketing areas as those where GSOM traditionally has the best research progress. The key factor to succeed in this program is a collaboration with top U.S. and European partner schools in designing and delivering advanced courses and dual academic advisors arrangements.
