GSOM Faculty Development and Promotion Opportunities

The GSOM faculty development program reflects the school’s expansion plans both in the size and range of degree programs and the academic needs of its professional groups. In addition, GSOM faculty development meets the requirements of international institutional accreditation and values the key role of a high-caliber faculty that is crucial for leadership on the global marketplace.

GSOM degree program faculty comprises four resources:
1.    Full-time (FT) faculty;
2.    Part-time (PT) faculty;
3.    Visiting faculty;
4.    Guest lecturers and other temporary instructors.

GSOM retains the equivalent of 86 full-time faculty positions that are filled by 67 full-time professors and a combination of part-time and visiting faculty. To support the successful implementation of the development plans for GSOM degree programs, an additional 15 new full-time professorships will be added by 2012 to bring the total to about 80 full-time, 40 part-time (including those from other faculties of St. Petersburg University), and a number of visiting professors each semester. These numbers do not include the replacement (e.g. retirement, reallocation, etc.) of any current full-time professors for various reasons (estimated as 20% turnover by 2012), which could bring the need for new full-time hires to between 15 and 30. This means that GSOM will recruit between five and eight new FT faculty members each year.

GSOM recruiting plans fully reflect a strategic move towards the continued development of a graduate school of international stature. As a result, all new hires for full-time faculty positions will be expected to have extensive experience and/or excellent potential in teaching both graduate and undergraduate programs (Master, MBA/EMBA and Ph.D.), in conducting research and/or developing cases of international quality, and in both spoken and written English of the highest caliber.

The recruitment plan is implemented by all seven academic departments/professional groups at GSOM through the extensive search for international professors that can then be incorporated into the respective professional groups.

While the Strategy, Finance, Marketing and Organizational Behavior groups all have evident needs for additional faculty, especially urgent needs are to be found in the areas of IT in Management and Operations Management.

GSOM has a clearly communicated, well-structured and consistently implemented set of policies for faculty development and promotion. To comply fully with EQUIS and AACSB requirements, a new edition of the GSOM By-Laws and Policies was completed at the end of 2007. It introduced basic policies for the development of a tenure system in compliance with Russian federal legislation and regulations, and with the St. Petersburg University Charter.

The fundamental requirement of the faculty-related policies at GSOM require the delivery of approximately 150 hours of lectures per academic year for degree programs at any level. It is a faculty member’s responsibility to produce high-quality “codified knowledge” which is understood to include a variety of academic publications – from case studies and articles appearing in peer review journals, to textbooks and research monographs.  Publication in top research journals, both in Russia and internationally, is a key criterion for faculty promotion opportunities given the particular importance of this activity for GSOM.

GSOM will continue to allocate funds to support annual individual and group training of faculty and GSOM executive managers at leading business schools such as Harvard, LBS, Sloan, Haas, etc., to facilitate participation in the most important conferences of key international societies (e.g., EMAC, Ibis, EBEN), to organize professional development seminars and in-house training, and to improve the professional English language communication skills of faculty members.

GSOM is deeply committed to a performance-oriented approach, with a focus on excellence in teaching and research measured by the international recognition of a faculty-member’s achievements.

To recruit, develop, and retain the best Russian and international faculty, GSOM relies on its Chairs. In addition to enhancing the reputation of, and compensation for, prominent scholars with this status, the system of Chairs serves as an important tool to help attract and retain outstanding educators. An added benefit is that it can also motivate highly talented Doctoral students to develop a successful academic career as a continuation of the Ph.D. program.
