World-class Research Capabilities
The Research Institute in Management at GSOM was established in 2004 as the first institution of its kind in Russia and over the past several years has achieved impressive growth in designing and implementing international-level research projects and programs at the school. Several research papers by GSOM faculty have been accepted for publication in international refereed journals and 12 research papers by faculty and doctoral students have been selected for presentation at top international research conferences. In addition, GSOM has organized a number of its own highly prestigious international research conferences. The School also has a number of ongoing research projects with new empirical data on Russian firms and markets. The current goal is to see approximately ten papers by our faculty published annually in international refereed journals. To achieve this goal, GSOM is increasing research efforts, reformulating research priorities and adhering to international quality research criteria.
Research at GSOM
GSOM has established a special research institute with the goal of achieving a distinct position as the world’s premier center of knowledge on Russian business. GSOM is also addressing the need to leverage other research and education institutions – in Russia and beyond – by developing an “open model” of international collaboration. This involves matching local and international faculty as well as linking the international faculty with PhD students. The research Institute continues to build state-of-the-art electronic resources on Russia that include:
• economic, business and company data;
• access to research and published papers;
• links to relevant sites with materials on the Russian economy and businesses.
Plans for the ongoing development of the GSOM Research Institute in Management include recruiting Russian and international research advisors, research fellows and visiting experts, as well as creating Ph.D. scholarships to attract research talents that are vital to the school’s success in this area.
GSOM increases the international visibility of its research productivity by:
• improving incentives for publications in peer reviewed international journals;
• bringing together GSOM faculty and international faculty in the design, implementation and publication/presentation of research;
• making research findings readily available to the world research community;
• focusing on a limited number of core topics that demonstrate areas of the greatest potential interest to publishers and with clear practical applications.
Research Priorities
Research at the institute has been built around a limited number of subject areas/disciplines that include Strategy, Finance, Public Policy and Economics. While there has been good output in these fields, a differently formulated research focus can be used to achieve multi-disciplinary results which would arouse the interest of international publishers.
To this end, GSOM:
• applies a stronger international and comparative focus;
• demonstrates a clear, multidisciplinary emphasis;
• provides a focal point for the Institute by setting up a new, high profile initiatives to be funded through the Advisory Board and other agencies.
Such a focus includes corporate transformation and innovation and complementary programs on key sectors (e.g. ICT) and economy-wide innovations. The emphasis is on understanding the factors necessary for effective innovation and the successful adaptation to change on the Russian and international markets.
International Quality Criteria
The publication standards of international peer-reviewed journals constitute the key criteria for GSOM’s overall research policy. Publication in top Russian-language refereed journals (as recognized by GSOM) is strictly limited in number and is viewed as insufficient (compared to publication in international journals) in contributing towards GSOM’s international stature. It is worth noting that The Financial Times-40 List publications are crucial to achieving recognition in the research community, receiving international institutional accreditations, and positioning GSOM among the leading business schools in international rankings.
Strengthening links between research and teaching, especially for executive programs, is vital to internationalize and to improve the quality of research. Building such relationships are the most important measures that can be taken toward building strategic partnerships with top international business schools and are established through international research conferences of the highest caliber being held at GSOM.
