World-class Research Capabilities

Developing world-class research capabilities is essential for creating and sustaining business school with internationally strong brand. The Research Institute in Management at GSOM was created in 2004 as the first institution of this nature in Russia and during the last three years achieved a strong progress in starting and implementing  international-level research projects and programs at GSOM. Several research papers by the GSOM faculty were accepted for publication in  international refereed journals, 12 research papers by the faculty and doctoral students were selected to be presented at top international research conferences., GSOM organized a number of highly prestigious international research conferences.  The School has a number of outstanding research projects with new empirical data on Russian firms and markets.  However, the current goal is to have about 10 papers by our faculty published annually in the A, B and even C class international refereed journals. To achieve this goal during the next 5-year period GSOM needs to increase research efforts, to reformulate research priorities and to consistently follow international quality research criteria.

Research at GSOM

GSOM established work of a special research Institute with a goal to achieve GSOM’s clearly distinct positioning as the world premier center of knowledge on the Russian business.  GSOM shall also pursue an evident need to leverage other research and education institutions – in Russia and beyond – by developing an “open model” of international collaboration. It would involve matching local and international faculty; and linking the international faculty with PhD students. The research Institute should have state-of-the-art electronic resources on Russia to include:
  • economic, business and company data
  • research publications and papers access,
  • links to relevant sites with materials on the Russian economy and business.

GSOM shall develop as soon as possible an efficient administration system for the Institute.  Recruiting of Russian and international research advisors and visiting experts, research fellows, as well as creating of Ph.D. scholarships to attract research talents are vital. to achieve success in this area.

GSOM shall increase its research productivity of a high international visibility by improving internal organizational arrangements by:
  • improving incentives (remuneration and promotion-related) for publications in peer reviewed international journals;
  • connecting the GSOM faculty and international faculty in designing, implementing and publishing/presenting of the research;
  • making the research findings easily available for the world research community
  • focusing on a limited number of core research topics with a high potential of interest by publishers and with clear applicability in the business community and therefore, for funding.

Research Priorities

The research at the Institute shall be built around a limited number of subject areas/disciplines, e.g. Strategy, Finance, Public Policy, Economics. While there have been good research outputs in these fields, a differently “packaged” research focus can be used  to achieve multi-disciplinarity results which would be interesting for international publishing.

GSOM shall also
  • apply a stronger international and comparative focus;
  • demonstrate a clearly multidisciplinary emphasis;
  • provide a focal point for the Institute by setting up a new, high profile initiative to be funded through the Advisory Board and other agencies.

Such focus can include corporate transformation and innovation and complementary programs on key sectors (e.g. ICT) and economy-wide innovations. The emphasis shall be placed on understanding of the factors necessary for effective innovations and for successful adaptation to changes in the national and international markets.

International Quality Criteria

The publications standards by the international peer-reviewed journals shall constitute  the key standards for reformulating GSOM’s overall policy for research.  Publications in the top Russian-language refereed journals (recognized by GSOM) shall be strictly limited in number and shall be viewed as insufficient (compared to publications in the A,B,C category international journals) in contributing towards GSOM’s brand international recognition  It is worth emphasizing that The Financial Times-40 List publications are crucial for achieving not only a recognition in the research community but to achieve international institutional accreditations, and high positioning in the international rankings of the  best business schools.

Strengthening of links between research and teaching, especially at executive programs, is vital to internationalize and to improve the quality of the research. Such links are the key step to gain strategic partnerships with top international business schools.  This approach is applied by running  research conferences at GSOM (starting from 2008 only high-profile international forums will get funding from GSOM)
