About the case-method and case studies

A case study is a structured teaching material tailored to a particular course of study and describing situations from business practice.

Active teaching methods based on the case-method constitute a methodologically organized process of analyzing real-life situations from business practice (situational analysis) which helps students develop managerial skills.

Case study development at the graduate school of Management

For more than thirteen years of its history the Graduate School of Management has passed all the stages of the case-method integration into the teaching process: from initial efforts of particular professors to the point of well-established system of case writing and case teaching.

Three case collections were published at the School of Management of Saint Petersburg State University, a number of cases were published in journals, some of them being registered in international case collection data bases.

The main goal of the efforts made within the project of establishing a world-class Graduate School of Management on the basis of the St. Petersburg State University School of Management  is to form a sustained system  of support for teaching materials development  that would correspond to the latest achievements in business education, i.e.:
  • Support case-writing and case teaching.
  • Inspire the development of new course-tailored teaching materials for active learning and make it a well working mechanism which takes into account customized programs needs, modern trends and business development in Russia. Cases are to be created and polished up on an on-going basis. During the first year of the national project aimed at the Graduate School of Business establishment, the number of professors writing cases doubled, and they are planning to continue developing cases. In the course of one year, more than twenty case studies were developed. The GSOM professors are teaching with these cases in class.  Besides, around fifty small format cases, along with caselets, were written to teach on courses developed by the  GSOM professors.
  • Provide interrelation among all key elements of the case-writing system, i.e. meet the demand for new cases in class, establish an on-going system of advanced training for professors, encourage them to write cases and render administrative support.
  • Create a basis for collecting, classifying and distributing knew knowledge; compile a case data base, and in the future establish a large scale resource center.
  • Integrate the system of GSOM teaching methods support into the international education process.
